Strategy Optimisation
The maintenance strategy drives life-cycle costs, component schedules, parts forecasts, labour forecasts, maintenance plans and component risks and opportunities. In AMT, maintenance strategies are housed in Projections.
The strategy process consists of a number of related and parallel activities that support the maintenance effort. The core strategy process covers
- Setting up the original maintenance strategy.
- Periodic strategy reviews, and validating data.
- Identifying opportunities.
- Investigating.
- Testing alternate strategic solutions.
- Actioning and adjusting the short or long term strategy.
- Documenting changes and reporting.
The strategy functions in AMT are designed to support this process, and a key outcome of this process more accurate forecast of financials, components, availability, parts, labour, rotables and so on.
Strategy management and optimisation is the most difficult area of maintenance to identify specific and easily measurable KPIs that gauge performance. Overall, the asset management group is responsible for monitoring equipment performance and managing strategy to optimise asset group performance; so the real measure of the asset management group performance is the equipment performance. Unfortunately, there are many other factors that also impact equipment performance, so these cannot be viewed as directly under their control.
- Projected Cost Variance (PCV)
- Performance vs Budget
- Availability
- Reliability
- % Changeouts before failure
- A key measure of the effectiveness of the equipment health activities. This needs to be viewed in conjunction with the average component life against budget - it is a fine balance between being too conservative and too aggressive.
- Standard Job Coverage
- The preparation and usage of standard jobs leads to improved planning efficiency, standardisation of work performed and improved parts forecasting. At this point there is no specific KPI measurement in AMT for standard job coverage but it can be manually calculated relatively easily.
- Work Scope Coverage
- The preparation and usage of work scopes leads to improved quality of work performed. At this point there is no specific KPI measurement in AMT for standard job coverage but it can be manually calculated relatively easily.
