Record fields are used to store record numbers and to display the corresponding path name for the record.

Record fields are mainly used for storing precedences. Precedences determine which records must be mined before the current record can be mined in scheduling and the record is referenced using the record number.

Record numbers do not have to be stored in a record field as they are simply a number. The advantage of storing them in a record field is that the record number (which is meaningless to you) will be displayed as the record name (which is meaningful to you).
